WEST BOLDON RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION

Notes of Meeting held on Thursday 19th October 2006 at St Nicholas Church Hall

Present:                L McCann, Chairman, Mrs C Baker Vice-Chairman, members of the Committee and some 12 residents of West Boldon [Apologies were received from 10 residents] .

1.                               Correspondence and Updates.

The Chairman reported that Avondale Gardens/Dipe Lane was part of the DVLC Test Course, which explained why so many learner drivers use the route.

No response had been received from David Elliott to our letter.  It was noted, however, that the white lining on the mini-roundabout by Tubs & Shrubs had been repainted.

The Highways Report on local roads at the CAF Meeting gave no date for other work in the area.  It was agreed that further contact be made with David Elliot to clarify outstanding points.

2.                Schools and Community Links.

i)                 The Church of England School has a Community Room available free of charge on Monday and Wednesday afternoons until 3.30 pm.  On Thursdays from 2.30 to 3.30 parents have a get-together.

It was agreed that

(a)     we try to establish whether there are local groups which would like to use the room, and that we try to meet the parents with a view to expanding our committee and local links, and

(b)      we should seek out interested people to help children with their reading, and/or pass on skills in gardening, needlework, knitting, etc.

ii)                   Boldon School, New Road- the offer of IT training by some of the senior students for members of the Committee was to be discussed with the Head Teacher, and hopefully this will start when everyone has settled into the new Buildings

3.                Conservation Area - Land adjoining Wheatsheaf Hotel.

Residents and the Church of England School are interested in turning this land into a Community Space linked to the ‘village green' next to it.

It was agreed to arrange a site visit with an environmental expert to discuss the possible uses of this area.  Suggestions include a wild flower garden, woodland garden, and a ‘wild area' to attract birds and other wildlife.  Local residents and schoolchildren are to be invited and asked for their views.

4.                Training Courses.

A number of places have been booked for Committee Members on courses which will be arranged by CVS.  They will also provide funding for these.

5.                Any Other Business.

i)                     Coat of Arms - There is some interest in having these displayed as Village Markers.  It was agreed that the topic be raised again as part of the Consultation process.

ii)                   Items of local interest can be viewed/added to on the web-site www.boldononline.co.uk, a site set up by George Wright.

6.      Date of Next Meeting.

Thursday 23rd November 2006 at 7.15 pm in St Nicholas Church Hall.

Carols around the Tree:       was discussed at our meeting on 19th October 2006   The community involvement was brilliant. Everyone, without exception got involved and had gave their contribution on some or all of the topics.

"Boldon Christmas Festival" will be held on Tuesday 19th December 2006 @ 6.30. We meet at the Christmas Tree next to West Boldon Post Office, move to in between the Wheatsheaf and the Black Horse, then down to the Red Lion. All pubs are involved in supporting the event as well as many local businesses. Dont forget the kids disco on at the Wheatsheaf.

Want to be involved - regular meetings and activities - dont miss out - be proud of your community and join in the discussions.
