A little about the history .
The Travelling Man dates back to approximately 450
yrs ago, probably as some form of Inn or
Coaching House. The recent building work confirmed that part of the building
dates back to that era. Up until the very late sixties it was known as the Railway
Tavern and before that the Railway Inn. We have a photograph
dating back to 1933 when it was known as the Tavern but if you look
close enough at one of the windows it shows the name Inn,
so we are no further forward when the name changed to Tavern.
The pub served the very nearby railway system that connected all of County Durham
(pits, farms, Consett steelworks etc) to the staithes at Tyne Dock and the
maritime network. The Boldon Staithes which were just opposite the pub, were
removed and rebuilt at Beamish
Museum and now form part
of the goods yard there.
