For West Boldon to achieve a Silver Medal in the Nothumbria in Bloom Regional Competition of the Britain in Bloom was , without doubt due to the efforts of the West Boldon Residents Association supported by South Tyneside Council. More amazing this was the communities first entry into the competition.

On Sunday 28th February, West Boldon Residents Association did a litter pick around St Nicholas Church down to the A184 roundabout on the opposite side of the road to Tubs and Shrubs and The Red Lion.
Helleborous Niger
Clearing the rubbish from around the roundabout and in particular the shrubbery which is against Rectory Green many plants were found. In particular a Helleborous Niger coming into blossom as well as naturalised snowdrops.
Snowdrops in West Boldon
Snowdrops, or Galanthus to give them their correct name, are the classic winter flowering plant, loved by everyone.
George Wright of Tubs and Shrubs recalls planting it some years ago. "This spot was ideal for the Christmas Rose and explains that it has survived because of the leaf mould producing a deep fertile well moist soil. Together with the deciduous trees that is allowing the light in the winter and part shade in the summer its clearly very happy."
"The turnout today just shows how proud our community is of the area. Together with the local authorities help in collecting the rubbish bags and their continued support we will have a very good chance of bringing home an award.
Luckily the weather held off in the morning . Here, the winding path edge is tidied up of rotted leaves.
Having rained for a few days, filling the bags up was hard work because the leaves were wet and heavy.
